Moving Towards a Restraint Free Environment
A restraint free environment epitomizes the concept of patient centered care. Side rails are not the safe medical device we all thought they were. Today there are about 2.5 million hospital and nursing home beds in the United States. Between 1085 and January 1, 2009, 803 incidents of patients caught, trapped, entangled, and or strangled in beds with rails were reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Of these reports, 480 people died, 138 had a nonfatal injury and 185 were not injured because of staff intervened. San Jacinto Manor has implemented a process that requires ongoing patient evaluations and monitoring to optimize bed safety. We realize that many of our residents will go through a period of adjustment to become comfortable with new options. We encourage each of you to talk with the health care planning teams to find out which option is best for you. We have more information to come.
